And so, he needed a name unique to him and to his plans. After all, history was full of chancellors, kings, and emperors who had experienced failures. He needed a name that would be the first, and the only. He needed a name that would carry him to victory. A word as difficult to define as the man himself, the closest translation is 'Leader'.
To the loyal old, he was the savior of the German people. In turn, they would help him by turning in treacherous neighbors, by financing the war machine, and by contributing to the manufacture of supplies needed to secure "breathing room" for the empire to come.
And to the most loyal, the inner workings of the Nazi party, he was a god, infallible and indestructable. They, the true believers would be the mouthpieces of the machine that Germany would become. Sure, there was a Minister of the Interior and a Minister of Justice but these titles were ordinary. Every nation had one of those. Hitler was better than that. He had a Minister of Propaganda and a Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs. He assembled around himself, a circle of men who were of a like mind. They would succeed because they were meant to succeed. Failure was never considered because they could not fail. With this mindset, even at the end, when it was clear that the war was lost, some of this group would choose to follow him to the grave.
And then there were the non-believers.
They could follow one of several paths:
1: Escape in anticipation of a time when escape would become impossible.
2: Remain, speaking against the new order and suffering the consequences.
3: Profess false loyalty to the Nazi party.
4: Do the little things to help the resistance or the allies.
5: Do the big things to help the resistance.
6: Stay and enjoy the benefits of powerful friends. Grab your share of the wealth.
7: Do nothing and try to weather the storm.
8: Do nothing and try to hide.
9: Help those in charge in any way that they ask because to resist means death.
10: Do . . .
11: Do not . . .
12: There is no try.
. . .
Such complexity, and all of this in Germany alone.
Now that Hitler had total power, he could squelch, cleanse, annihilate, PURIFY, and prepare his people to follow him to eternity . . .
